Generative Engine Optimization vs Answer Engine Optimization: The History, The Overlap, And Why The Model Matters More For GEO
Generative engine optimization vs answer engine optimization explained: history, overlap, a do-both plan, and why the AI model matters more for GEO.

Generative engine optimization vs answer engine optimization has a simple answer: AEO is the older term for getting your page picked as the direct answer, and GEO is the newer term for getting your brand cited inside an answer that an AI writes.
My verdict is that you should run both as one job, because the same well-built pages win both, and the split mostly matters for how you measure the results.
AEO belongs to the era of featured snippets and voice assistants, when one page got boxed or read out.
GEO was named in a 2023 research paper about AI search engines that blend many sources into one written reply.
If you want my team to look at your own site, book a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit and get a custom game plan.
Near the end, I'll explain why the AI model behind an answer matters more for GEO than it ever did for AEO, using real scores from this leaderboard.
Generative engine optimization vs answer engine optimization at a glance
This table puts the two terms side by side so you can see every real difference quickly.
| Question | Answer engine optimisation (AEO) | Generative engine optimisation (GEO) |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Answer engine optimisation. | Generative engine optimisation. |
| Where the term comes from | It is the featured snippet and voice assistant era term. | It was named in the 2023 paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization. |
| What the engine does | It lifts an existing passage from one page and shows or reads it. | It has a language model write a new reply from several pages. |
| What a win looks like | Your page is the one answer in the box. | Your business is named or cited inside the reply. |
| What it rewards most | It rewards a short, clear answer under the question. | It rewards cited sources, quotes, statistics and agreement across sites. |
| How you measure it | You check whether you hold the snippet. | You re-run a fixed prompt list and log mentions and citations. |
| Does the AI model matter? | It matters very little, because the text is lifted as written. | It matters a lot, because the model chooses and rewords what it says. |
The last row is the part most comparisons miss, and it's the reason this post sits on a model leaderboard.
What answer engine optimization means
Answer engine optimisation is the work of shaping a page so a search engine or assistant can lift it as the direct answer to a question.
Google's featured snippets documentation describes those boxes as results where the descriptive snippet shows first, and they can also appear inside People Also Ask.
Voice assistants pushed the same idea further, because a smart speaker reads one answer rather than showing a page of links.
Google still documents speakable structured data as a beta feature that lets Google Assistant read news sections aloud and return up to three articles for a topical news question.
I couldn't find one reliable source for who coined "AEO" or on what date, so I won't give you one.
What I can say is that it's the snippet and voice assistant era term, and people have stretched it since to cover AI answers too.
What generative engine optimization means
Generative engine optimisation is the work of making your content more visible inside answers that a generative AI writes.
The term comes from GEO: Generative Engine Optimization by Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari, Tanmay Rajpurohit, Ashwin Kalyan, Karthik Narasimhan and Ameet Deshpande.
It was first posted on arXiv on 16 November 2023, and the arXiv page says it was accepted to KDD 2024.
The paper describes generative engines as search tools that gather information from several sources and summarise it with a large language model.
Its authors built a benchmark called GEO-bench and reported visibility gains of up to 40% in generative engine responses.
Their best methods were citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics, which gave a 30% to 40% relative improvement on their position-adjusted word count measure.
Keyword stuffing didn't help in their results, and the best method changed from one subject area to another.
In my own words, GEO is about being the name the AI gives when someone asks it a question.
How the two terms got blurred
AEO came first, when the prize was one boxed or spoken answer.
GEO arrived with AI search, when the prize became a mention inside a written reply.
Then AI answers started appearing inside normal Google results, and people began using both terms for the same work.
I'm part of that blur, because I call my own GEO system the answer engine.
Its three moves are be the source, be everywhere and be first.
So the honest answer to "which term is right" is that the routine matters far more than the label.
Where the two jobs overlap
Most of what you do for one helps the other.
Google's AI features and your website page says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
The same page says there are no additional requirements, no special schema and no AI text files needed for those features.
Both jobs reward an answer in the first two lines of the page.
Both jobs reward the same facts about your business on every site that mentions you.
Both jobs fall apart if the content is wrong, so a human fact-check is part of both.

Where they genuinely differ
The first difference is how many sources share the win, because AEO usually gives one page the box while GEO often blends several.
The second difference is what earns the spot, because AEO leans on format while GEO leans on evidence and agreement.
The GEO paper found that lower-ranked pages gained the most, with the cite sources method lifting visibility by 115.1% for pages ranked fifth in its tests.
The third difference is measurement, because a snippet is easy to see while AI answers change between runs.
In my Hermes GEO video I point out that Google and the AI engines don't yet report AI traffic well.
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is counted inside the normal Search Console report under the "Web" search type.
A do-both plan in six steps
This is the plan I'd follow to cover both terms with one routine.
- Write 20 to 50 real buyer questions, mixing quick factual questions with "who is the best" questions.
- Run them in Google, AI Mode and ChatGPT, then log who holds the answer box and who gets named.
- Export your Search Console data to a CSV and ask an agent which topics are already working.
- Publish answer-first pages, with the direct answer in the first two lines for the AEO layer.
- Add a real case study, cited sources and real numbers under each answer for the GEO layer.
- Fact-check every page by hand, then re-run the question list every two weeks.
In my Hermes GEO video I run step three with Hermes Agent, which is free and open source, and the prompt asks for keyword and topic ideas to rank inside AI search engines based on what's actually working.
Proof from my own screens
In my GEO examples video, Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and cites several of my pages.
In my Hermes GEO video, AI Mode lists me first when asked for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026 and links to my sites.
One of my sites went from zero to more than 1,300 clicks a day, and two other sites are on the same path.
Those are my results from my own screens, and they're not a promise for your site.
Three myths about GEO and AEO
The first myth is that AEO is dead, but featured snippets still exist and their answer-first format is what AI replies like to quote.
The second myth is that GEO needs special AI files or schema, but Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need none.
The third myth is that you need two separate pages for the two terms, but one well-ordered page can serve both jobs.
The real split is in what you measure, which is answer boxes for AEO and mentions or citations for GEO.
What Google's 1 October 2026 guidance adds
Google updated its page on using generative AI content on 1 October 2026.
It says it's "critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content" before publishing.
That review also covers titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text.
Google also explains that generative models predict likely words rather than retrieving facts, which is why they can get things wrong.

Why the AI model matters more for GEO than for AEO
GEO and AEO don't ship their own models, because they're ways of publishing content rather than software.
The difference is what happens after the engine finds your page.
In AEO, the engine lifts a passage from your page and shows it, so the wording is mostly yours.
In GEO, a language model reads several pages and writes a new reply, so the model decides what to keep, what to drop and how to phrase it.
Google's AI features page even says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links can vary.
That's why the model layer is worth understanding for GEO, even though you can't choose which model Google or ChatGPT uses.
How the makers' models score on GoldieBench
Here's how some models from the companies behind today's AI answers score on their live GoldieBench pages.
| Model | Maker | The maker's AI product | GoldieBench average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5 | Anthropic | Claude | 8.27 |
| GPT-5.6 Sol | OpenAI | ChatGPT | 8.16 |
| Grok 4.7 | xAI | Grok | 7.15 |
| Gemini 3.6 Flash | Gemini | 7.08 | |
| Claude Sonnet 5 | Anthropic | Claude | 7.01 |
Claude Opus 5 leads this group at 8.27, with GPT-5.6 Sol close behind at 8.16.
Gemini 3.6 Flash scores 7.08, and it's the only Google model in this table.
In my Hermes GEO video I mention that AI Mode runs Gemini 4 Argon, and that model isn't on this board, so I can't score it.
The board also can't tell you which exact model AI Overviews, AI Mode or ChatGPT runs at any moment, because the makers change that themselves.
What these scores do and don't tell you
GoldieBench scores one-shot builds, which is a very different job from choosing which business to name in an answer.
A higher score doesn't mean a model mentions your business more, because the answer depends on the pages it finds and what they say.
Where the scores do help is your own GEO and AEO work, such as having a model draft answer-first pages from your case studies.
For that job I'd pick a model that follows detailed instructions closely, and I'd still fact-check every line it writes.
