Generative Engine Optimization vs AIO: The Two Meanings Of AIO, What Google Says, And The Models Behind AI Overviews
Generative engine optimization vs AIO explained: the two meanings of AIO, what Google says about AI Overviews, and how the models behind them score.

Generative engine optimization vs AIO is the same thing in one sense and not in another, because people use AIO to mean two different things.
If AIO means "AI optimisation", it's practically a synonym for GEO, and if AIO means Google AI Overviews, it's one slice of GEO for one Google feature.
Either way the work underneath is the same, because Google says AI Overviews have no extra requirements beyond good SEO.
If you'd like my team to look at your own site, book a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit and get a custom game plan.
Below you'll get a table that untangles the terms, a plain explanation of each and what Google says about AI Overviews.
Near the end, I'll look at the AI models behind AI Overviews and AI Mode, and what this leaderboard can and can't tell you about them.
Generative engine optimization vs AIO at a glance
This table shows GEO next to both meanings of AIO.
| GEO | AIO meaning "AI optimisation" | AIO meaning "AI Overviews" | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Getting named or cited in AI answers. | A broad label for showing up in AI tools. | Getting shown inside Google's AI Overviews. |
| Where the term comes from | A 2023 research paper. | Industry usage with no single definition. | A named Google Search feature. |
| Tools covered | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. | Usually the same set. | One Google feature. |
| Official guidance | The paper defines the term, and no AI company owns it. | None. | Google's AI features documentation. |
| How it relates to GEO | It's the whole job. | Nearly a synonym. | A subset for one engine. |
The useful habit is to ask which AIO someone means before you plan any work.
What is GEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation.
The term comes from the paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, first submitted in November 2023 by a team from Princeton University, IIT Delhi and two independent researchers.
It was accepted to KDD 2024 and introduced GEO-bench, a benchmark of queries across many subjects for testing visibility in AI answers.
The paper describes generative engines as tools that gather information from several sources and summarise it with a large language model.
In plain words, GEO is getting your business named when someone asks Google AI, Gemini or ChatGPT a question.
What is AIO?
AIO doesn't have one agreed meaning, and that's the honest answer.
Some people use it for AI optimisation, a broad label for being visible in AI search tools and assistants.
Used that way, it's the same job as GEO under a different name.
Other people use it as shorthand for Google AI Overviews, the AI-written summary at the top of some Google searches.
Used that way, optimising for AIO means trying to appear as a source in that one feature.
What Google says about AI Overviews
For the AI Overviews meaning, Google's AI features and your website page is the official source.
It says the best practices for SEO remain relevant, with no additional requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet to be a supporting link.
It says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup.
It says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, running several related searches across subtopics to build a response.
It says AI Overviews only appear when Google's systems think they add something to classic Search, so they often don't trigger.
It counts AI features traffic inside the normal Search Console Performance report under the "Web" search type.
It also says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with people more likely to spend longer on the site.
Controlling what shows in AI Overviews
Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot are how site owners manage crawling for Search, and that includes its AI features.
To limit what shows from a page, Google points to nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.
It also mentions Google-Extended for limiting training and grounding in some of Google's other AI systems.
I'd only use those controls on purpose, because blocking snippets can also stop a page from appearing as a supporting link.
For most businesses the goal is the opposite, which is to be shown and cited more often.
How GEO relates to optimising for AI Overviews
Google's checklist makes a page eligible, but it doesn't make it the answer.
The AI reads the pages that rank and sums up what they say.
I compare it to five friends recommending the same restaurant, because if five good pages agree on a name, the AI repeats it.
GEO is the work of getting those pages to agree on you, and it applies to AI Overviews and every other AI tool at once.
The GEO paper found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved visibility, while keyword stuffing performed poorly.

The answer engine: one approach for both
I call my GEO system the answer engine, and it has three moves.
| Move | What it means | Why it helps with AI Overviews and other tools |
|---|---|---|
| Be the source | Every page carries a real case study, test or result. | The AI can't write about a test only you ran. |
| Be everywhere | Several sites and platforms point to the same answer from different angles. | More good pages agree on you, so more answers repeat you. |
| Be first | You publish within 24 hours of a new topic appearing. | Your page is often the only good answer when the AI looks. |
I run multiple websites, each with a different angle, which is how I show up two to four times on page one for one search.
When Jev AI dropped, I published on "Jev architecture" and "Jev waitlist" that same weekend.
What it looks like on my screens
In my GEO video, Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and cites several of my pages.
The AI Overview for "best HARO agency" lists five suppliers and links Goldie Agency first, and Goldie Agency ranks first organically too.
For "best AI SEO community", AI Profit Boardroom ranks first and the AI Overview cites it more than once.
In my latest video, AI Mode lists me first for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026, and I show that AI Mode does send traffic.
One of my sites went from zero to about 1,300 Google clicks a day, and on one day it got over 9,600 impressions inside Google's AI features.
These are my own results from my own screens, one of my sites flopped, and nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say.
How to cover both meanings at once
- Ask which meaning of AIO a brief or proposal uses, and write it down.
- Check that the pages you want cited are indexed, crawlable and snippet-eligible in Google Search.
- Make sure structured data matches the visible text, and keep Business Profile or Merchant Center details up to date if you use them.
- Rebuild your key pages around real case studies, with sources and real numbers.
- Publish the same story on other sites and platforms from different angles.
- Run your buyer questions in Google and in other AI tools every week, and note who gets named.
- Fact-check every AI-assisted page by hand before it goes live.
Google's page on using generative AI content, updated on 1 October 2026, says it's "critical" to review AI content manually, including titles, descriptions, structured data and alt text.
In my latest video I run this kind of workflow with Hermes Agent, which is free and open source, starting from a free Search Console export.

Two ways to get help
The first is the free AEO SEO strategy session, which I call a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit, and it's a call rather than a written report.
The second is the AI Profit Boardroom, with my Agent OS, a search OS that finds GEO keywords from your own Search Console data, my SEO skill, four coaching calls a week and 3,400+ members.

The models behind AI Overviews and AI Mode, on GoldieBench
GEO and AIO aren't AI models, so neither has a GoldieBench score.
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, and it doesn't name them on its AI features page.
In my latest video I say on screen that AI Mode runs Gemini 4 Argon, and that model isn't on GoldieBench.
The only Google model on the board today is Gemini 3.6 Flash, so here's how it compares with the other makers whose assistants people ask.
| Model | Maker | Assistant it's linked to | GoldieBench average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5 | Anthropic | Claude | 8.27 |
| GPT-5.6 Sol | OpenAI | ChatGPT | 8.16 |
| Gemini 3.6 Flash | Gemini | 7.08 |
Gemini 3.6 Flash averages 7.08 on its live page, behind Claude Opus 5 at 8.27 and GPT-5.6 Sol at 8.16.
That doesn't tell you anything about the model inside AI Overviews, because it isn't the same model and Google doesn't say which one it uses.
Why model scores don't decide GEO vs AIO
GoldieBench scores one-shot builds, which is a different job from choosing which business to name in an answer.
The original GEO paper ran its experiments with GPT-3.5 Turbo, and its methods still worked when it tested them on Perplexity.ai.
That suggests the content habits matter more than which model is reading, because the model summarises the pages it finds.
Where model quality matters is your own workflow, such as analysing Search Console data or drafting pages from your case studies.
For that, I'd pick a model that follows detailed instructions well and still fact-check every line.
