Free Jev API Key: The Free Doors, And The Benched Models To Pair It With
By Julian Goldie · 2026-10-05 · GoldieBench Blog
A free Jev API key is easiest to get through OpenCode Zen's jev-1.13-free model, which answered my test calls with no key at all on 21 September 2026.
That is the short answer.
The longer answer is the part nobody else is writing about.
Jev is a decision model, not a build model, so the real question is not just "how do I get it free?" but "what do I plug it into?"
I run GoldieBench, the leaderboard where 40 models have now produced 1,609 one-shot demos across 50 tasks.
So in this post I will show you every free Jev door, then use real scores from the board to show you which models a free Jev key should be sending work to.
Free Jev API key: the doors that work in October 2026
Jev comes from TypeSafe AI, and it launched on 15 September 2026.
There are five ways in, and three of them cost you nothing to start.
| Route | Key needed? | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
OpenCode Zen jev-1.13-free | The docs say use your Zen key, but my 21 September test worked with none | Free for a limited time, and the reply showed a cost of zero | Wiring a free decision step into an agent today |
| jevplayground.com | No key, no signup | Free, with usage limits | Testing your questions before you write code |
| TypeSafe console | Yes, your own key | $0.042 per million input tokens, output free | Production work from the official source |
| Vercel AI Gateway | Yes, with a card on file | Monthly free credit, then $0.042 per million input tokens | Stacks already on the Vercel AI SDK |
| OpenRouter | Yes, your normal key | About $0.00002 a call in my runs | Setups that already route every model through OpenRouter |
Vercel's promotional pricing for Jev ended on 25 September, so the free part there is now only the standard monthly credit.
One trap: Vercel's docs say that once you buy credits, your account moves to the paid tier and the monthly free credit stops applying.
The Zen docs describe the free model as available "for a limited time", so create a Zen key anyway in case the keyless behaviour stops.

Why Jev is not on the GoldieBench leaderboard
People keep asking me where Jev sits on the board.
It does not sit anywhere, and that is on purpose.
GoldieBench gives every model the same one-shot prompt to build a game, a page, a simulation or a visual, then scores the rendered result from 0 to 10.
Jev cannot do that, because Jev does not write text or code at all.
You give it a state, such as an email or a log, plus typed questions, and it hands back answers with probabilities and a confidence number.
There are three question types: a yes-or-no check, a choice from a fixed list, and a score on a scale.
So a GoldieBench score for Jev would be meaningless, a bit like timing a satnav in a drag race.
What the board can tell you is which builders Jev should be choosing between.
What a free Jev API key actually saves you
Here is the maths that makes a decision layer worth the effort.
Every "is this a refund?" or "which agent takes this?" question used to be a full call to a writing model.
Compare Jev's $0.042 per million input tokens with the list prices of the models on the board.
| Model on GoldieBench | Avg score | Input price per 1M | Input price vs Jev |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | 8.16 | $5 | About 119× Jev |
| Claude Opus 5 | 8.27 | $5 | About 119× Jev |
| Gemini 3.6 Flash | 7.08 | $1.50 | About 36× Jev |
| Muse Spark 1.2 | 7.55 | $1.25 | About 30× Jev |
| MiniMax M3 | 7.97 | $0.30 | About 7× Jev |
And that is before output, because Jev's output tokens are free while every writing model bills you for the sentence it writes around a one-word answer.
In my own routing test, Jev answered in about 382 ms, Claude Haiku 4.5 took 974 ms and Claude Sonnet 5 took 1,966 ms, and all three routed the same 20 jobs correctly.
Same answers, a fraction of the time and the price.
The free Jev key pairing table, built from real scores
This is the part only a benchmark can give you.
A routing decision is only as good as the lanes you route to, so here is how I would fill each lane from the board.
| Lane | What goes there | Pick from GoldieBench | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strong | Planning, audits, long builds | Claude Opus 5 (8.27) or GPT-5.6 Sol (8.16) | The two highest single models on the board |
| Value | Bulk drafts and mid-size builds | MiniMax M3 (7.97) or GLM-5.2 (7.77) | Near-frontier scores at a fraction of the price, and GLM has open weights |
| Cheap and fast | Small one-step jobs | Gemini 3.6 Flash (7.08) | Launch-day Flash, $1.50 per million input tokens |
| Local | Private files and repetitive chores | Qwable 5 27B (7.14) | The best free local builder on the local board |
| Human | Anything that pays, sends or deletes | You | No model should own an action you cannot undo |
A free Jev key sits in front of all five lanes and makes the call in well under a second.
How to set up the free Jev API key route in five steps
First, open jevplayground.com and run a sample question so you can see what the answers look like.
Second, write your routing question as a choice question, with one option per lane from the table above.
Third, write each lane's criteria line like a job description with examples inside, not a vague label.
That one change is huge: in my 100-job test, vague lines put 65 jobs in the right lane and example-filled lines put 98 there.
Fourth, send the call to the Zen endpoint with the model set to jev-1.13-free.
Fifth, set a confidence line, and send anything below it up to the strong lane or to you.
In the same test, 25 out of 25 risky jobs went to the human lane, which is exactly what you want.
What a free Jev key will not do for you
It will not make a weak builder strong.
If you route a hard 3D build to a cheap lane, the bench already shows you what happens: low scores and broken renders.
It will not write your content, answer your customers or explain its reasoning.
And it is a free trial lane, not a forever plan, so build your stack so the decision endpoint is one config value you can swap.

FAQ
How do I get a free Jev API key?
The quickest free route is OpenCode Zen's jev-1.13-free model, which answered Julian's test calls on 21 September 2026 with no key. jevplayground.com is free with no signup for testing, and Vercel AI Gateway gives a monthly free credit once a card is on file.
Is Jev on the GoldieBench leaderboard?
No. GoldieBench scores one-shot builds such as games, pages and simulations, and Jev does not write text or code. It returns typed answers with probabilities, so it is best used to route work to the benched models.
Which models should I pair a free Jev key with?
Use a strong lane such as Claude Opus 5 (8.27) or GPT-5.6 Sol (8.16), a value lane such as MiniMax M3 (7.97) or GLM-5.2 (7.77), a cheap lane such as Gemini 3.6 Flash (7.08), a local lane such as Qwable 5 27B (7.14), and a human lane for risky actions.
How much does Jev cost after the free tier?
TypeSafe lists Jev at $0.042 per million input tokens with free output. Julian's OpenRouter calls came to about $0.00002 each.
Will the free Jev tier last?
The OpenCode Zen docs describe jev-1.13-free as available for a limited time, and Vercel's Jev promo ended on 25 September 2026. Treat free access as a trial and keep the endpoint swappable.
