Best AEO Thought Leaders UK In 2026: The Ranked List, And The AI Models Worth Pairing With Their Advice

The best AEO thought leaders UK, ranked, with what AEO is, how to judge an AEO expert and how to learn it, plus the AI models that score best here.

Best AEO Thought Leaders UK In 2026: The Ranked List, And The AI Models Worth Pairing With Their Advice — illustrated hero

The best AEO thought leaders UK marketers can learn from in 2026 are, in my ranking, me (Julian Goldie), James Dooley, Mark Williams-Cook, Dixon Jones, Crystal Carter, Will Critchlow, Kasra Dash and Luca Tagliaferro.

This is my site and my own list, so I've put myself at number one, and I'd rather you judge the evidence than trust the ranking.

I'm British and I write in UK English, but I'm based in Bangkok, so I'm a UK-origin entry and not a UK resident.

The other seven are placed in the UK by their own website, their employer's site or a public profile that I checked in October 2026.

Below you'll find the ranked list, what AEO is, how to judge an AEO thought leader, how to learn it, and a late section on which AI models score best on GoldieBench for this kind of work.

Top 3 picks at a glance

My first pick is me, Julian Goldie, for anyone who wants to see AEO run every day by AI agents with published results.

My second pick is James Dooley, for businesses that want AI assistants to recommend them by name.

My third pick is Mark Williams-Cook, for teams that want their content built around the questions people really ask.

How I ranked the best AEO thought leaders UK

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation, and I used four tests that you can run yourself.

The first test is published AEO work, such as a tool, a guide, a podcast, a talk or an experiment that is public today.

The second test is a clear lane, so you can say in one sentence what the person is strongest at.

The third test is a UK link that I could check on a source I trust.

The fourth test is practical value, which means a business could act on the advice this month.

I only used neutral facts I could confirm, I left out anything I couldn't, and nobody paid to be on the list.

The 8 best AEO thought leaders UK, ranked

1. Julian Goldie of Goldie Agency

I run answer engine optimisation every day with AI agents across a network of sites, and I publish the results from my own Search Console.

The fastest new page I've published reached Google page one in 14 hours, which I show in my Claude AI SEO guide.

I claim the King of AEO title, and my King of AEO post explains why that title is informal and contested.

Underneath the AI work sit more than ten years of SEO and Goldie Agency, a 7-figure SEO and link-building agency with 70+ people.

I also run this leaderboard, because I wanted real data on which models I can trust with that work.

You can book a free SEO strategy session or join the SEO Elite Circle if you want my help directly.

2. James Dooley of FatRank and PromoSEO

James Dooley founded FatRank and PromoSEO, and his FatRank profile describes a no-win-no-fee, performance-based model.

A press release reports that he was named King of AEO at a ceremony in Leigh, Greater Manchester, so he's another public claimant to that informal title.

He promotes an idea called Decision Engine Optimisation, which is about being the provider an AI assistant recommends at the point of decision.

I'm declaring a connection, because FatRank named my AI Profit Boardroom the number one AI community after testing 27 communities.

3. Mark Williams-Cook of Candour and AlsoAsked

Mark Williams-Cook leads the SEO agency side of Candour, a digital agency in Norwich.

His Candour team page says he led the development of AlsoAsked, a tool that maps "People Also Ask" questions.

Question research matters in AEO because answer engines are built around the questions people ask.

He's also known for the Search with Candour podcast and for SEO training.

4. Dixon Jones of InLinks and Waikay

Dixon Jones runs InLinks, an entity SEO platform, and his own site says he was a founding owner of Receptional, one of the UK's original SEO companies.

His site says InLinks released Waikay in March 2025 to improve brand visibility in LLMs such as ChatGPT and Gemini.

Waikay's about page says the name stands for "What AI Knows About You" and names him as the author of "Entity SEO".

5. Crystal Carter of Wix

Crystal Carter is the Head of AI Search & SEO Communications at Wix, according to her Wix AI Search Lab profile.

The profile says she has almost 20 years of experience and that her work has been featured at Google Search Central, Microsoft and BrightonSEO.

Her public Muck Rack profile lists the United Kingdom as her location.

She writes about LLM optimisation, llms.txt files for agents and the agentic web.

6. Will Critchlow of SearchPilot

Will Critchlow is the founder and CEO of SearchPilot, which says it is headquartered in London.

SearchPilot started in 2015 as an R&D project at the consultancy Distilled and became an independent company in 2020.

In August 2026 he published "Is GEO Working?

How to Get Beyond Prompt Tracking", which argues for testing AI search changes on your own site.

I like that approach, because it's the same reason this bench exists.

7. Kasra Dash of The New Search

Kasra Dash is an entrepreneur and SEO consultant based in Manchester, according to his own site.

His site says he founded The Masterminders Conference, created mySEO.app and runs a community called The New Search.

8. Luca Tagliaferro

Luca Tagliaferro describes himself on his site as a London freelance SEO consultant with 15+ years of experience and a BrightonSEO speaker.

His site lists "AI & AEO Visibility" as a service covering Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity.

What AEO is and how it works

AEO is the work of getting your content chosen and cited when someone asks an AI assistant or an AI search feature a question.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode each write one answer and cite a few sources underneath it.

AEO is the job of becoming one of those sources.

Some people call the same work GEO, which stands for generative engine optimisation, and most people on this list use both terms.

AEO sits on top of SEO rather than replacing it.

A page still has to be crawlable, original and trusted, and then one passage on it has to be clear enough to be quoted on its own.

In practice that means the answer goes in the first sentence, every section makes sense alone, and the page carries FAQ and Article schema with a fresh date.

How to judge an AEO thought leader

AEO is a young field, so confident advice is cheap and tested advice is rare.

A good thought leader shows dated evidence, such as Search Console data, a published experiment or a case study.

A good thought leader has built something you can inspect, such as a tool, a community or a library of articles.

A good thought leader admits what nobody knows yet, because AI search changes every few months.

A good thought leader discloses what they sell, including when they rank themselves on their own list, as I've done here.

A good thought leader avoids guarantees, because nobody controls what an AI assistant says.

EvidenceDated data, tests or case studiesScreenshots with no dates or context

What the best AEO thought leaders UK have in common

When I line these eight people up, three patterns stand out.

Every one of them has built something you can inspect, whether that is a tool, a platform, a community or a library of content.

Every one of them treats AEO as an extension of good SEO rather than a replacement for it.

Most of them are open about their commercial interests, which makes their advice easier to weigh.

That's the bar I'd hold any new AEO voice to, including people you meet at a local event.

How to learn AEO yourself

You don't need to hire anyone on this list to get started.

Pick one page that already gets impressions in Google Search Console.

Rewrite the opening so the first sentence answers the main question.

Add four to six real questions as an FAQ and mark them up with FAQPage schema.

Update the date, republish and request indexing.

Ask three AI assistants the same question a few weeks later and note which sources they cite.

If you want a structured path, my guide to AI SEO training compares the options, including the free ones.

The free AI Money Lab is the zero-cost starting point, and the AI Profit Boardroom is where I teach the full workflow with four coaching calls a week.

For the wider field beyond AEO, my top SEO experts list and my best SEO professionals list cover the global names.

Where this list is limited

I only included people whose UK link I could check, so some respected UK voices in AI search are missing.

Their absence isn't a judgement on their work.

AI search moves quickly, so treat this as a snapshot from October 2026.

Which AI models are worth using for AEO work?

This is the late model section, and it's the question I get once people start handing AEO jobs to agents.

An AEO agent has to follow a long brief, put the answer first, structure every section and write valid schema without being reminded.

GoldieBench is my leaderboard, and it gives every model the same one-shot prompt to build a game, a page, a simulation or a visual, then scores the result from 0 to 10.

It does not measure AI citations, rankings or writing quality, so I won't pretend that it does.

What it does measure is how well a model follows a detailed brief and ships a working page first time.

The closest task to AEO work is the landing page task, where every model gets the same brief to build a marketing landing page in one shot.

ModelGoldieBench avgLanding page score
Claude Opus 58.278.4
GPT-5.6 Sol8.168.7
Qwen 3.88.108.4
Grok8.099.0
Kimi K37.898.6
GLM-5.27.779.0

These numbers come from the live model pages on this site.

Claude Opus 5 has the highest single-model average in this table at 8.27, with GPT-5.6 Sol close behind at 8.16.

On the landing page task, Grok and GLM-5.2 both scored 9.0.

How I'd use these scores for AEO

For the main brain of an AEO agent, I'd pick a model with a high average and a strong landing page score, such as Claude Opus 5 or GPT-5.6 Sol.

For high-volume drafts where cost matters, I'd look at strong open models such as Qwen 3.8 or GLM-5.2.

For running models on your own machine, the local models board shows which free models are good enough to try.

Whatever model you pick, a person should check every page before it goes live, because a high bench score doesn't stop a model making confident mistakes.

What GoldieBench cannot tell you about AEO

The board can't tell you which model will get you cited, because citations depend on your site, your brand and your competition.

It can't tell you whether a model's facts are right, so fact-checking stays a human job.

It can tell you which models reliably follow detailed instructions and build working pages, and that's a large part of running AEO with agents.

Will Critchlow's advice to test on your own site applies to models as well, so run your own brief through two or three of them before you commit.
