Hermes Agent For SEO: What It Does, How To Set It Up, What To Avoid, And Which Model To Give Each Job — illustrated hero

Hermes Agent for SEO can read your Search Console data, pick the next keyword, draft from your own material, check internal links, watch competitors, check indexing and send you a weekly report.

Hermes Agent is the free, open-source AI agent made by Nous Research, and it runs on your own machine.

It solves a simple SEO problem, which is that the useful data sits in Search Console and almost nobody reads it every week.

An agent can read it every week without getting bored.

I'm Julian Goldie, and I should be honest that my biggest SEO pipeline runs inside my Agent OS, where Claude does most of the writing and Hermes works alongside it.

So I'll show you the workflow first, then the limits, and the model question comes near the end.

I checked each flag against my own install, which is Hermes v0.21.4.

How to set up Hermes Agent for SEO

You install Hermes Agent, connect a model with hermes setup and run hermes update.

You verify your site in Google Search Console, which is free.

You export your queries from the Performance report and save the file where Hermes can read it.

You teach Hermes your writing rules with /learn.

You schedule one weekly job with hermes cron create.

You read every draft before it goes live.

That is the whole setup, and the sections below explain each job.

Keyword research from Search Console

Search Console is the only tool that knows what Google already thinks of your site.

You ask Hermes for three lists.

Striking-distance keywords sit at positions 5 to 20, where one good post can move you to page one.

Click-through leaks are page-one keywords that almost nobody clicks.

Content gaps are searches where you get impressions and have no page for them.

hermes -z "Read ~/seo/gsc-queries.csv. List striking-distance keywords, click-through leaks and content gaps, ranked by impressions."

In my own stack the live pull runs through the SEO tab of my Agent OS.

On 22 September 2026 that tab showed 78 striking-distance keywords and 23 leaks, as shown in my Infinite Ranking Engine guide.

One keyword, "hermes workspace", had about 37,000 impressions across two sites and only 307 clicks.

Both pages were already on page one, so the fix was a better title and not a new post.

A scheduled content pipeline

A scheduled job is a prompt that Hermes runs on a timetable.

hermes cron create "0 7 * * 1" "Read the Search Console data above. Pick the top striking-distance keyword. Draft one post from the newest transcript in ~/transcripts and save it as a draft." --name "Weekly SEO loop" --script gsc_pull.py --skill seo-writer --deliver telegram

The --script flag injects a script's output into the prompt on every run.

The --skill flag attaches your SEO skill, and --deliver sends the result to a target such as Telegram.

Hermes also has a /goal command for a standing goal it keeps working on across turns.

The rule at the top of my own SEO skill is that no transcript means no article.

I record my screen while I do real work, and each recording becomes a text file an agent can read.

The agent may not invent a feature, a number or an example that isn't in the recording.

Skills for SEO with /learn

A skill is a recipe the agent reads before it starts.

/learn ~/Documents/seo-style-guide.pdf

The /learn command reads a document once and writes a lean index, reference files, a glossary and a cheat sheet.

You can point it at a style guide, a writing SOP or a list of banned phrases.

The engine's own testing on real books reports 24 to 51 times fewer tokens than pasting the book into the chat.

I tested it on The Art of War in my /learn guide.

Book mode only ships in newer builds, so you should update first.

Memory for SEO

An SEO agent with no memory repeats topics and sounds generic.

I use an Obsidian vault, which is a folder of notes every agent reads before it answers.

My vault held 614 notes when I measured it for my Hermes second brain guide.

The agent reads one short "about" page first, then the notes it needs.

You must give Hermes the full folder path, because I skipped it once on camera and it built the folders in its own workspace.

Competitor monitoring and the trend radar

Hermes has a monitor mode for scheduled jobs.

hermes cron create "every 6h" "A competitor page changed. Summarise what is new." --name "Competitor watch" --monitor-url https://example.com/blog --deliver telegram

The page is fetched on each tick, and the agent only runs when the content has changed.

You should pick a stable page, because a page with a clock on it looks changed every time.

My trend radar is one hermes -z run at 6am that reads live posts on X and returns six stories with a heat score out of 100.

The receipts in my Hermes Oracle AI guide are 49 mornings logged, 294 trends scored and 46 pages published.

One of my sites went from 27 clicks a day to 358 clicks a day while that system was publishing.

That system runs on Hermes and Claude Code together inside my Agent OS.

Internal linking

Every new article in my pipeline links to two to four older posts on the same site.

The skill scans every existing post before it writes, so Google sees depth on one topic.

You can ask Hermes to list your posts and suggest four links with natural anchor text for a draft.

My pipeline also adds a small "latest updates" block to three to five older posts, which points them at the new page.

That step runs on Claude, and it is covered in my Claude AI SEO guide.

Indexing

A page that isn't indexed can't rank.

Google's documentation gives two routes, which are the URL Inspection tool for a few URLs and a sitemap for many.

Google also says a crawl can take from a few days to a few weeks, and a request doesn't guarantee inclusion.

Hermes can't force indexing, but it can watch for it.

/loop 10m check whether the new pages are indexed --until all six are indexed

That example comes from my /loop guide.

Reporting

Reporting is the easiest SEO job to hand over.

hermes cron create "0 8 * * 1" "Compare this week with last week. Report clicks, impressions, the three biggest movers and the next keyword, in ten lines." --name "Monday SEO report" --script gsc_pull.py --deliver telegram --continuity

The --continuity flag lets each run see its own previous output, so the report builds on last week.

The results I've published

Every number here is from one of my own guides, and most of them come from the whole Agent OS and not from Hermes alone.

ReceiptNumberWhat produced it
One site during trend publishing27 to 358 clicks a dayThe Hermes radar plus the Agent OS publishing pipeline
New page to page one of Google14 hoursThe Claude-run SEO pipeline
One site over 90 days4,310 clicks from 122,674 impressionsThe same pipeline
Six sites over 16 months50,541 clicks and 3.25 million impressionsThe weekly Search Console loop

These are my results on my sites, and yours will depend on your niche and your links.

What Hermes Agent should not do for SEO

Hermes should not mass-produce thin pages.

Google's spam policies name this as scaled content abuse.

The policy covers many pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings and not to help users, "no matter how it's created".

Google's own examples include using generative AI tools to generate many pages without adding value.

One grounded page a week is the safer plan, and it is the one I follow.

Hermes also can't earn real backlinks.

In my Hermes SEO post on aiprofitboardroom.com I compare sites in one niche with the same content setup, and the one with active link building is the one that grew.

Hermes can plan the strategy, build a prospect list and draft the outreach, but people build the relationships.

Which model to run Hermes Agent on for SEO

Hermes Agent doesn't ship its own model, so you connect one through hermes setup.

This is where GoldieBench can help, with one honest limit.

GoldieBench scores models on one-shot build tasks, and it doesn't score SEO writing.

So I use the board as a guide to general capability, and I match the model to the job.

SEO jobWhat the job needsModels I'd look atGoldieBench average
Writing drafts and building the pipelineThe strongest model you can affordClaude Opus 58.27 across 50 scored tasks

Trend radar with live X searchAn xAI modelGrok 4.77.15 across 20 scored tasks
Reports and summaries on your own machineA free local modelGemma 4 12B on MLX3.98 across 42 scored tasks

My own pipeline writes with Claude, and Claude Opus 5.5 averages 7.57 across 50 scored tasks on the board.

My radar is pinned to an xAI model because only those carry the live X search tool.

Grok 4.7's page covers 20 tasks, so its average rests on a smaller set than the others.

The local Gemma score is low for one-shot builds, but a ten-line weekly report is a much lighter job than building an app.

The stronger local option is Qwable 5 27B Coder at 7.14 across 41 scored tasks, although it is slower.

You can pin a model to one scheduled job with --model and --provider, so cheap jobs stay on cheap models.

Free models that aren't on the board

MissingNo is a free stealth model that Nous Research currently offers on its portal.

It isn't on GoldieBench, so I can't give you a score for it.

In my own tests /learn worked well and fast on it, and a coding task was slower and not frontier level.

Solar Mini 4 is another free option I've covered, and it isn't on the board either.

My post on Hermes MissingNo explains how to switch the stealth model on.

FAQ

Can Hermes Agent do SEO?

Yes. Hermes Agent can read Search Console data, score keywords, draft posts from your own material, suggest internal links, watch competitor pages, check indexing and send scheduled reports. It should not mass-produce thin pages, and it cannot earn real backlinks.

Which model is best for Hermes Agent SEO work?

Match the model to the job. For writing, Claude Opus 5 averages 8.27 and Qwen 3.8 averages 8.10 on GoldieBench. For the trend radar, use an xAI model because it carries live X search. For reports, a free or local model is enough.

Does Hermes Agent ship its own model?

No. Hermes Agent is the agent, and you connect the model through hermes setup. That can be a Nous Portal account, an API key from a provider or a local model.

Does GoldieBench score SEO writing?

No. GoldieBench scores models on one-shot build tasks. It is a guide to general capability, and the SEO workflow on this page comes from Julian Goldie's own published guides.

Is MissingNo on GoldieBench?

No. MissingNo is a free stealth model from Nous Research and it has not been benched on GoldieBench, so no score is given. Solar Mini 4 is not on the board either.

Does Google penalise AI content made with Hermes Agent?

Google says it focuses on content quality rather than how content is produced. Its spam policies penalise scaled content abuse, which means generating many pages to manipulate rankings without helping users, however they are created.
