Grok Bot vs Claude Cowork: Which AI Models Run Behind Each, With Real GoldieBench Scores

Cowork lets you choose the Claude model; Grok Bot hides its routing. Here is what the GoldieBench numbers mean for each side.

Illustrated dark navy leaderboard with gold bars, a model selector dial on one side and a sealed routing box on the other

Grok bot vs claude cowork splits hardest on the model: Cowork lets you choose which Claude model runs a task, while Grok Bot picks a model for every task itself and never shows you which one.

That one design choice decides how much a benchmark score can help you.

For Cowork, a GoldieBench score is a direct input to a setting you control.

For Grok Bot, a score only describes models it might or might not route to.

Below are the scores that matter for this matchup, each quoted from the GoldieBench page I read it on, on 4 November 2026.

Which models each tool actually runs

Claude Cowork: you pick

Anthropic's Fable plan article lists Claude Cowork among the places you can select Fable 5 and Fable 5.1, as long as Claude Desktop is up to date.

The scheduled tasks form has an optional model field, so each recurring job can run on its own model.

Anthropic's models overview suggests starting most workloads on Claude Opus 5.5 and moving to Fable 5.1 for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work.

It lists Fable 5 and Opus 5 as legacy models that are still available.

On Max, Ultra and premium Team seats, Fable models are a standard part of the plan; on Pro and standard Team seats, they run on usage credits.

Grok Bot: it picks

The Grok Bot FAQ says there is no model picker, and the model can change from one request to the next.

It may be a first-party SpaceXSI model or a third-party model from a provider on Cursor's sub-processor list.

Usage views record the work as Grok Bot usage, not by model name, and a Cursor team's model allowlist doesn't apply.

The GoldieBench scores that matter here

ModelGoldieBench resultTasksPage read
Claude Fable 58.10/10 average, 4 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze47/models/fable-5
Claude Opus 58.27/10 average, 13 gold, 7 silver, 5 bronze50/models/opus5
Claude Opus 5.57.57/10 average, 0 gold, 0 silver, 1 bronze50/models/opus55
Grok8.09/10 average, 5 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze47 demos, 43 scored/models/grok
Grok 4.77.15/10 average, 0 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze20/models/grok47

Every score is a one-shot result: the same fixed prompt, one try, one self-contained HTML file, scored 0 to 10.

The tasks are games, simulations, visuals and pages, so read them as a signal of build quality, not of inbox or spreadsheet work.

What Fable 5's 8.10 tells a Cowork user

Fable 5 averages 8.10/10 across 47 tasks on its model page.

Its deep-dive page, /benchmarks/fable-5.html, puts it at #6 of 26 ranked frontier models.

GoldieBench calls Fable 5 the newest Anthropic model, but Anthropic now lists Fable 5.1 as current and Fable 5 as legacy.

GoldieBench has no Fable 5.1 page yet, so there's no bench score for the newer model.

If you run Fable in Cowork, treat the 8.10 as the floor of what the Fable line has shown here, not a grade for 5.1.

Opus 5 vs Opus 5.5: the default model question

Opus 5 posts 8.27/10 over 50 tasks, the highest of the Claude models in this table.

Opus 5.5, the model Anthropic suggests as the starting point, averages 7.57/10 over the same count of 50 tasks.

On the Fable 5 vs Opus 5.5 page, Fable 5 wins 27 to 18 with 2 ties.

For one-shot builds in a Cowork task, that points to Fable when your plan includes it.

For everyday document and spreadsheet jobs, these game-heavy tasks say less, so Anthropic's own guidance is the better guide there.

What the Grok scores tell a Grok Bot user

The Grok model page shows 8.09/10 across 47 one-shot demos, 43 of them scored, with a 256,000-token context window.

The same page also says standalone bench scoring is pending and lists the model as unranked in its trade-offs, so the page contradicts itself.

Grok 4.7 averages 7.15/10 on 20 tasks.

None of this tells you what Grok Bot runs, because xAI routes each task and doesn't name the model.

GoldieBench tests the Grok chat model, not Grok Bot the agent.

Fable 5 vs Grok, head to head

On /vs/fable-5-vs-grok, Claude Fable 5 wins 20 to 17 with 6 ties across 47 shared tasks.

On /vs/opus5-vs-grok, Claude Opus 5 wins 28 to 15.

Those are the closest model-level matchups to this comparison, but only the Cowork side lets you act on them.

How I'd pair models with each job

  • Event-driven chores (new email, Slack ping, webhook): Grok Bot, and let it choose the model.
  • One-shot builds in Cowork, like a landing page mock-up: Fable, given its 27 to 18 lead over Opus 5.5 here.
  • Everyday Cowork documents and spreadsheets: Opus 5.5, following Anthropic's default advice.
  • Recurring Cowork reports: set the model per scheduled task so a light routine job doesn't tie up your heaviest model.

We share the model routing table we use inside the AI Profit Boardroom.

Small-business examples

  1. A marketing agency: a Grok Bot routine fires on each client Slack request and drafts a reply; Cowork, set to Fable, builds the one-page HTML mock-up the client asked for.
  2. An accountant's office: Cowork on Opus 5.5 turns a folder of receipts into an Excel expense report with working formulas, as a weekly scheduled task.
  3. An online shop: Grok Bot watches order emails at its own address and lists refunds to approve; Cowork turns the month's list into a PowerPoint for the review meeting.

Read the Grok Bot changelog before you plan around Grok Bot features, because it ships often.
