Grok Bot Mac: Which AI Models To Run Beside It, And What The GoldieBench Scores Mean When Grok Bot Picks Its Own

The Mac app is only the client, so the scores that matter belong to the planner, the checker and the on-device models you control yourself.

Grok Bot Mac gives you no model to choose, so the models worth benchmarking are the ones you run beside it: a planner, a checker, and a local model that keeps private work on your own Mac.

The Grok Bot FAQ says there's no model picker; Grok Bot picks the backend model for each task, and that choice can differ from one request to the next.

Every GoldieBench score on this page was read from the live goldiebench.com pages on 1 November 2026, and each one names its page.

Your Mac runs the app, not the model

The deployment docs describe the desktop app as a client for chat, review and approvals.

The Bots themselves work on a cloud-hosted Linux machine.

So an Apple silicon MacBook and an older Intel iMac get the same Grok Bot brain; the chip only decides which .dmg you install (Get Started guide).

Where your Mac's chip does matter is the models you run locally next to Grok Bot, and that's where the bench helps.

What a GoldieBench score tells you here

The methodology page says every task is one fixed prompt, one shot, with a single self-contained HTML file out, scored 0 to 10.

It measures whether a model can plan and ship a working build in one pass.

It doesn't measure screen control or browser automation.

Read the numbers as a signal for the models that write your Bot briefs and check its output, not as a ranking of whatever Grok Bot routes to.

The Grok scores, for context

The Grok model page shows an 8.09/10 average across 47 tasks, with 5 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal and a 256,000-token context.

The home leaderboard lists Grok at #7, with 43 of 47 tasks scored.

The Grok 4.7 page shows 7.15/10 across 20 tasks and a 500,000-token context.

Its deep dive puts Grok 4.7 at board rank #18 of 26 ranked frontier models.

The same Grok 4.7 page lists outside reference results sourced to x.ai: DeepSWE v1.1 (high effort) at 71.0% and Terminal-Bench 4.0 at 38.0%.

None of those numbers tells you which model Grok Bot picks for a given task on your Mac.

Why Grok 4.7's terminal score matters for Mac users

The Grok 4.7 page calls Terminal-Bench 4.0 the weak spot xAI reports itself, at 38.0% at launch.

It also notes that 2 of the 20 builds died on load or never moved when played.

Terminal work is exactly what you'd be approving if you let a Bot run commands on your Mac.

That's one more reason to leave Execution on this computer on Ask every time or Never allow, and read every command card before you click Allow once.

The first-run card also offers Always allow, but that sets the policy for every Bot on your account, so skip it.

The one model the Grok Bot FAQ names

The FAQ uses Claude Opus 5.5 as its routing example, saying a task routed to Opus 5.5 doesn't change what it costs you per token.

On the Claude Opus 5.5 page, it averages 7.57/10 across 50 tasks with a 1,000,000-token context.

That page also says all 50 one-shot builds rendered with zero console errors and all 23 games passed the input playtest.

If you want your own planner to think like one of the models Grok Bot may route to, Opus 5.5 is the documented link.

Planner picks: Claude Opus 5 or GPT-5.6 Sol

Grok8.09/10475 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze/models/grok
Claude Opus 5.57.57/10500 gold, 0 silver, 1 bronze/models/opus55

Opus 5 is #2 and GPT-5.6 Sol is #4 on the home leaderboard.

Both carry big context windows on their pages: 1,000,000 tokens for Opus 5 and 1,050,000 for GPT-5.6 Sol, so a whole week of Bot output fits in one review pass.

Opus 5's 13 gold medals are the most of any model in this table, which makes it the pick when a brief has many steps.

Use either one to write the Bot's first job message, its Ask first rules and the skills you save once a process is stable.

The AI Profit Boardroom has the trainings for wiring a planner like this into your Agent OS.

Checker pick: watch prompt-injection defence

A Bot browsing the web reads text it didn't write.

xAI's approvals docs treat text from an email or web page as information, not as your request.

When you want a second model to review what the Bot gathered, the GPT-5.6 Sol page lists a prompt-injection defence score of 0.910, up from 0.697.

That page marks it as an outside reference benchmark, not a GoldieBench medal score.

Local models on your Mac: the private lane

The local models page ranks strictly on-device models, run on your own hardware via Ollama or Apple MLX, with nothing leaving the machine.

Local modelRunnerSizeAverageTasks
Qwable 5 27B CoderApple MLX (mlx-lm)15.0GB7.14/1041

Gemma-4 12B CoderOllama7.4GB4.25/1042
Gemma 4 12B · MLXOllama · MLX + MTP7.7GB3.98/1045

The page is upfront that a small model on a consumer Mac will rarely beat a frontier cloud model on an ambitious one-shot build.

Use a local model for drafting notes and briefs you'd rather keep off the cloud, then hand the finished brief to Grok Bot.

Check the runner column before you download: the top pick needs Apple MLX, while the Gemma-4 12B Coder and Agents-A1 builds run through Ollama.

Don't let Grok Bot run your local model server unasked

Grok Bot can run commands on your Mac only when you allow it under Execution on this computer, which defaults to Ask every time.

Per the v0.71.2 notes, a local server or other background job that a Bot launches on your Mac stays up after its command finishes (Grok Bot changelog).

So if a Bot ever starts something on your machine, check it's stopped when the job ends.

Keeping that setting on Never allow leaves your local models to your own Agent OS.

A three-model stack around Grok Bot on a Mac

  1. Planner: Claude Opus 5 (8.27/10) or GPT-5.6 Sol (8.16/10) writes the brief and the rules.
  2. Doer: Grok Bot runs the job on its cloud computer, with whatever model it routes to.
  3. Checker: GPT-5.6 Sol reviews what came back, or Qwable 5 27B Coder (7.14/10) on MLX when the material should stay local.

For how the doer behaves on its cloud screen, read the Grok Bot computer use model guide.

FAQ

Does my Mac chip change which model Grok Bot uses?

No. Bots work on a hosted cloud computer and Grok Bot picks the model per task. Your chip only decides which .dmg you install and which local models you can run yourself.

What is the best local model on GoldieBench for a Mac?

On the local models page, Qwable 5 27B Coder leads with 7.14/10 across 41 tasks, running on Apple MLX at 15.0GB.

Can I make Grok Bot use Claude Opus 5?

No. The FAQ says there is no model picker and users cannot be routed to or away from a particular model. Use Opus 5 as your own planner instead.

Is GoldieBench a test of Grok Bot itself?

No. The methodology page describes one-prompt, one-shot HTML builds scored 0 to 10, so the scores apply to the models you run alongside Grok Bot.
